MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings, Inc. is the holding company of the Group formed in April 2010 through the merger of Aioi Insurance Co., Ltd., Nissay Dowa General Insurance Co., Ltd., and Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Group.
MS&AD was established in April 2008 under its original name Mitsui Sumitomo Group (MSIG). In September 2009, MSIG, Aioi and Nissay Dowa reached a business integration agreement. It was following this that in April 2010, MSIG changed its name to MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings to acknowledge the merger between the three companies. 
Toyota Motor Corporation is the largest single shareholder in the MS&AD Group. This is due to its strong and longstanding relationship with the Aioi Nissay Dowa Group, including historically a significant shareholding interest going back over 50 years.
MS&AD is now the largest insurer in Asia and operates in over forty countries. This is predominantly due to a disciplined but pro-active approach to underwriting and insightful claims management. MS&AD is currently rated A+ by Standard and Poors and AM Best and A1 by Moody's (Correct as of 1st June 2012).
The purpose of MS&AD insurance Group is to achieve sustainable growth and to enhance enterprise value through the creation of a world-class insurance and financial services group that operates globally, by rapidly and significantly improving quality and expanding its operating presence and corporate resources. 
The group aims to pursue synergies by combining its comprehensive strengths to provide high-quality products and services that meet the needs of their individual customers.
